I yet recall articles in the August 1979 Special Edition of Ebony; at which time my son and only child was 7.
In 2000 I was startled by the news of a 6-year old taking a gun to school and killing one of his classmates who had angered him the day before.
In 2001 I came close to being hit by the neurotic driver of a car I later learned was en route to a broad day, double murder. Notwithstanding the blessed fact that the double murder had nothing to do with my son, a 29-year old African-American caught up in the corner to corner street life of San Francisco, it was the murder that floored me to bending knees.
The fact that the epidemic of youth and young adult killings were isolated to the mistakenly labeled "black-on-black" crime issue was a disturbing enigma to me. Knowing God used particles of dust from the earth and formed the flesh of one being, from which all of mankind stemmed; and knowing God gave the life of his very own breath to that one and same formation of dust, I knew God had created all men equal.
When the elders of my generation knew something strange was going on, they would say one or two things: "Something is fishy 'bout that" or "I smell a rat". My soul knew something fishy was going on with African-American males; which, in recent years began manifesting frequently campus to campus.
My soul cried out to know--and know beyond the shadow of any doubt whatsoever: 1) Why African-American males were murdering one another at an alarming rate; 2) Why were African-American male youth murdering one another at much higher rates than the male youth of other nations. 3) How children, youth, and young adults could commit cold-hearted murder of thy neighbor and massacre school mates without blinking an eye.
